#FenkilAt35 ― Eritreans across the world are preparing this week to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Liberation of Massawa through the legendary "Operation Fenkil". This historic battle was more than just a military victory as it was a defining moment in our struggle for liberation and independence of Eritrea.

Here are the key outcomes of this decisive operation that you should know:

1. Over 40,000 enemy soldiers were either killed, wounded, or captured. Among the captured, more than 8,000 were officers, including 300 high-ranking commanders. Notable figures included Brigadier General Tilahun Kefle, Brigadier General Ali Haji Abdullahi, and Captain Tsegaye Zewde, a senior naval commander.

2. During the three-day offensive, 80 tanks were captured, and 30 were destroyed. Additionally, a significant number of artillery, BM rocket launchers, anti-tank missile systems, and other heavy weaponry were either destroyed or rendered inoperative.

3. The modernized enemy communication and intelligence network was dismantled. The Ethiopian Navy's command structure was placed under complete siege.

4. The cities of Mitsiwa and other towns and villages were liberated, and the entire Semhar region population was freed.

5. The Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) established its strategic influence in the Red Sea region and neighboring countries.

6. The military balance of power between the EPLF and the Ethiopian Army was entirely shifted. The Derg regime was completely dismantled as a system of governance.

7. The logistical support for the Ethiopian Army, particularly the Derg's supply chain, was severely disrupted. Aerial reinforcements were cut off, and the enemy’s resources were neutralized under EPLF control.

8. Various military, political, and strategic victories were recorded, marking a decisive phase in the war.
