So with that I would like to start off that true or not true there are reports that seven Eritrean players have reportedly defected during the second leg of the AFCON qualifiers in Eswatini.

First and foremost, this is not a piece about criticism or blame, it’s about addressing the deeper challenges surrounding how the Eritrean National Football Federation (ENFF) manages competitions played outside the country.

MEKNES, MOROCCO – In a night of immense pride for Eritrea, the Eritrea national team marked its return to international competition with a commanding 2–0 victory over Eswatini at the Stade d’Honneur.

The Red Sea Camels showed incredible spirit throughout this historic AFCON qualifier. The breakthrough came in the 81st minute when Siem Eyob-Abraha scored a spectacular goal directly from a corner kick. Star forward Ali Suleiman later sealed the win deep into stoppage time with a brilliant solo run and clinical finish.

This victory belongs to every Eritrean who has waited for this moment. We carry this massive momentum into the next leg. Congratulations to our boys!

Introduction 

On February 10, 1990, Operation Fenkil delivered a crushing blow to Ethiopia’s military occupation, liberating the strategic port city of Massawa and setting the stage for Eritrea’s final victory. Just over a year later, on May 24, 1991, Eritrea would achieve total independence, permanently breaking free from Ethiopia’s illegal annexation.

The name Fenkil, ፈንቅል meaning “uproot” in Tigrinya, was a fitting symbol for the operation. It did not just reclaim Massawa, it uprooted Ethiopian proxy colonial rule, shattered the Derg’s military stronghold, and dismantled the myth of Ethiopian control over Eritrean land and sea. More than just a military triumph, Operation Fenkil was the embodiment of Eritrea’s unwavering resistance against oppression. Eritreans do not surrender; they fight, they endure, and they win.

When the Organization of African Unity (OAU) was founded in May 1963, Africa’s leaders faced a stark choice. Should they cling to the colonial borders that had carved up the continent, or risk chaos by redrawing them? Should Africa redraw borders to reflect ethnic, cultural, or historical realities or freeze them as they were inherited at independence. Most leaders had feared that reopening borders would unleash endless wars. No one put this fear better than Malagasy (Madagascar) President Philibert Tsiranana; he urged restraint stating.

“It is no longer possible, nor desirable, to modify the boundaries of Nations, on the pretext of racial, religious or linguistic criteria. ….Indeed, should we take race, religion or language as criteria for setting our boundaries, a few States in Africa would be blotted out from the map.”

The Port of Adulis was one of the most important harbors on the western coast of the Red Sea in antiquity. Situated about 60 km south of modern Massawa, it provided access to the sea to the Aksumite Kingdom (1st–7th centuries AD), linking the African hinterland to the wider Indian Ocean and Mediterranean trade networks.

Hamid Idris Awate gilt in Eritrea als der Held, der am 1. September 1961 den bewaffneten Kampf gegen die äthiopische Besatzungsarmee begann. Für seine Tapferkeit und seine historische Rolle wurde er in vielen eritreischen Liedern gefeiert. 2018 erschien auch zum ersten Mal in Asmara ein Buch über sein Leben, das von Haileslasie Weldu, einem früheren Kämpfer der Eritreischen Volksbefreiungsfront (EPLF) geschrieben ist.

The song ‘Anuyntico’ by the young Eritreans Reshid & Dina in Afar and Tigrinya has already been viewed by more than a million viewers on the YouTube channel PlusX in less than two weeks. This clearly shows how impressed people are with this song. We would like to congratulate Reshid and Dina, as well as all others who contributed to this great success.

We have also observed that many viewers, especially those from the Horn of Africa, would  like to have a translation of the song Anuyntico in order to understand its meaning. To fulfil this wish, we have decided to translate the song into English and German.

We are aware that translating such lyrics into foreign languages is not an easy task and presents a challenge. Nevertheless, we hope that our translations will help many excited people to understand and enjoy this song even more.
